Unity, Diana, and Jessica Mitford

DID YOU KNOW: J.K. Rowling has said that the writer Jessica Mitford is her biggest heroine, and the Black sisters are to an extent based on Jessica and her famous wealthy British aristocrat sisters, Unity (a fanatical Nazi supporter said to be in love with Hitler) and Diana (the famously beautiful wife of a top Hitler supporter). Jessica herself was disowned when she eloped with a socialist activist named Esmond at the age of 19.

The endlessly fascinating Mitford Girls, with polarised politics and dazzling social and literary careers.

Nancy Mitford (not pictured above) was a successful novelist, and her books The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate are a wonderful picture of young society girls from upperclass family trying to be unremarkable, but some how riddled by scandal. A family very much like the Mitfords, in fact. Well worth the read.
